SC HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Many people have images of a white man with a rifle dressed in camouflage with war paint on his face talking about the end of the world while quoting Scripture. Or a Christian living in the mountains talking about the anti-Christ taking over the country. Most people do not have images of Black people living in the city with a pantry full of food and an emergency evacuation plan, but they exist.
Not too many city Preppers will let you know who they are and even fewer Black city Preppers will publicly identify themselves. Of course, the main reason for secrecy is the potential for theft and beggars, in case of emergency your house would be the first place to break into. As a person of color the ridicule from friends and family is not worth the aggravation, it is best to keep your activities quiet.
As a non-denominational follower of Jesus Conservative it has taken me years to learn how to quietly attend family functions and ignore the liberal conversations around me. Now that I am learning how to be ready for any type of emergency because I believe we are in the ending of time I have also learned how to speak without creating controversy. This is important because I do want my family and friends to be ready for any type of emergency. I consider myself a follower of Jesus with conservative principles and a hybrid-Prepper; shhhh don’t tell anyone.
Let’s take it a step further; homesteaders. People may think homesteading is a bit extreme? Why would anyone grow their own food, raise their own animals and live away from civilization. Change the term from homestead to small farm and these same individuals will appreciate the lifestyle. Many people who think it strange that folks grow their own fruit and vegetables grow, or know someone who has a tomato plant or a few herbs growing in the kitchen window.
The difference is terminology. People consider themselves living in the times, they are dependent on electricity, gas, and running water to maintain their standard of living. During a weather emergency they flock to the stores to make sure they have enough of their necessities until the store opens again believing that if all else fails the government will help them out.
What I have noticed is that there are people of color who are so focused on what Black people don’t have that they do not consider what is actually happening around the world and how things will indirectly impact them. If you are looking back you cannot see the future. Seeing what I see, if I was a Prepper in the city I would have my bug-out bag ready and not tell anyone either.
