“Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”
And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

Ephesians 6:2 has become an often quoted Scripture while verse 6:4 has been ignored, or at least cast to the side. Today we face a lot of angry, resentful, rebellious children and for many the common denominator is the physical or emotional absence of a father.

EPHESIANS 6:4 The Complete Jewish Bible
Fathers, don’t irritate your children and make them resentful; instead, raise them with the Lord’s kind of discipline and guidance.

Like Christmas, Easter and Mother’s Day, Father’s Day has become a time to make money for the businesses. YES IT IS TRUE, many depend on that one day to acknowledge fathers but there are those who honor their fathers daily as Scripture suggest. When you are a loving father who does not “irritate” or “make resentful” your children it easy to be honored daily. Holidays should not be the reason to give to a loved one.

The Complete Jewish Bible says father’s should raise their children with the Lord’s type of discipline. To raise children this way a father must have a personal relationship with the Lord. A father has to know the word of God to know how to discipline and guide his children.

Father’s Day should be a day of introspection for men, Mother’s day should be a day of personal evaluation for mother’s.  Christmas and Easter should be a day of appreciation for the love of God. The accumulation of more stuff should not be the reason for the seasons.

A child who has a loving father does not need a day. A father who loves his children does not need to look for a day. If anything Father’s Day should be a day we honor ABBA FATHER.

Neither Mother’s Day or Father’s Day are in the Bible. After checking Wikipedia I learned that both days are celebrated in over 40 countries and has been for centuries. It is a tradition that has nothing to do with God’s word.

If a father thinks no one appreciates him despite all he does then perhaps he should look at his own relationship with Abba Father. Men who love the Lord and submit to His will have children who do the same. Men who neglect their personal relationship with God raise children who neglect their personal relationship not only God the Father but their earthly father as well.

PROVERBS 22:6 The Voice
Teach a child how to follow the right way; even when he is old, he will stay on course.

As a child we should honor our father, acknowledging his love on Father’s day is not wrong. Unfortunately, many earthly fathers are not a good example of our heavenly Father thus some children will not be honoring their father on Father’s day. But we all can honor God the Father.

And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”

On this Sunday, the Sunday before the earthly Father’s Day it is good to remember: No matter how great your father is Abba Father is greater and that is a reason to celebrate.   —written by Marsha L F Randolph
