A MATTER OF FAITH: JOHN 12:26

JOHN 12:26
If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.

Who does the Church leader serve? Is it the congregation or Jesus? If it is the congregation then there is no need to follow Jesus. If it is Jesus then the messages taught / preached should reflect His words.  Some believe that the church leader is the servant of the people.

MATTHEW 4:19
Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

MATTHEW 8:22
But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

MATTHEW 9:9
As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.

Everyone that Jesus called while here on earth He commanded to follow Him.  All 12 of the men who are considered Jesus’ Disciples had a purpose, even Judas (John 17:12). It is clear in Scripture that those who are called of God are to follow Jesus not man: “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” The life of Judas, the one who betrayed Jesus, reveals that not everyone serves our Lord.

MATTHEW 16:24
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Politicians are servants of the people, church leaders are servants of our Lord Jesus. Those who are committed to teaching others Scripture must do so without care or consideration for the desires of the people.

2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

It is not always easy to share the gospel when it involves messages that speak against lifestyles that the world wants to present as acceptable.  Church leaders; Pastors, Elders, Reverends, and other titles, are not called to teach a message based on the will of the people. The gospel represents good news to all who submit to the word of God.

Second Timothy reveals what should be preached / taught.
FIRST it must be understood by all that what comes out of the mouths of church leaders should be the WORD OF GOD;all Scripture, form Genesis to Revelation, is given to us by Father God. Next it must be understood that Scripture is the basis of ‘profitable’ church doctrine. Next we see that the Word is to be used for reproof and correction; both terms are forms of discipline. And Scripture should be used to teach those who want to follow Jesus how to live righteously. It is teaching the Word that followers of Jesus The Messiah will be able to live a Christ centered life and able to do what they are called of God to do.

Church leaders are required by God to present His words to His people.

2 TIMOTHY 4:1-4
I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

The Apostle Paul sternly warns Timothy which has been included in Scripture thus we must adhere to the warning as well. We, Church leaders, must be doers of the word and not speakers only. We must never turn our backs on Jesus in order to follow the crowd. No matter what is going on we must preach God’s word.  We are never to give in to popular opinion even though there will come a time when people “will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires” live; in fact now is that time.

People, like sheep, follow the leader. If the church leader is following Jesus the people will be headed in the right direction.

Jesus said in John 12:26- “If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.” A test of Christ centered leadership is revealed in who is blessing who. There are churches in which the Church Leader receives extravagant and materialistic gifts from the congregation as a token of honor. There are churches in which the Church Leader does not have a nice car, nice home, a wonderful wardrobe and other types of bling but he or she has peace, joy and love.

When I think of the great men and women who followed Jesus I don’t see mega-churches but mega souls. People like Watchmen Nee, Kathryn Kuhlman, and even Billy Graham. They have reached millions yet never within the four walls of a building. There message was and is about Jesus and how to live to please Him.

JOHN 12:26
If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
