A MATTER OF FAITH: WHATEVER IS PURE AND LOVELY

PHILIPPIANS 4:8-9
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.  The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

Your thoughts, what you meditate on, should be filled with whatever things are pure and lovely. The Word of God is good, salvation through Jesus the Son of God is pure and lovely. No matter what is going on in the world there is the assurance of help to those who have placed their trust in Jesus.

PROVERBS 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

The airewaves are filled with vile information. Programs that celebrate images that are offensive which can influence the soul. Many people think that it is important to be aware of what is going on in this world so as to live a better Christian life.

1 JOHN 2:16
For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.

What is worldly is not godly; what is godly is not worldly. Knowing all the players working in the NFL may be a good thing to know if you are a sports writer or announcer however if you are sick the informatin will not help you. Pointing out the transgressions of a political party may be entertaining and justify your being loyal to the opposing party but God is not politically influenced thus your blessings are not party based.

MATTHEW 6:25-34
“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Around about the time I began discussing Philippians 4 verses 8-9 I also started a 30 quest for positive news. I believed then and still do that false teachings are presented as true. There are people who participate in anti-Christ behaviors but church leaders exalt them as noble individuals. Both print and television news outlets declare what would is biblically just as unjust. As I sifted through various articles I discovered what seemed to be good news was actually not; the world’s good news does not agree with the gospel.

PHILIPPIANS 4:8-9 The Voice
Finally, brothers and sisters, fill your minds with beauty and truth. Meditate on whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good, whatever is virtuous and praiseworthy.  Keep to the script: whatever you learned and received and heard and saw in me—do it—and the God of peace will walk with you.

The word of God is crystal clear- pure. We nullify God’s word by our own words of doubt and unbelief. We soil the truth by infusing man’s ideology into what really is honorable, right, pure, lovely, good, virtuous and praiseworthy. We should know God’s word more than we know anything else.

When we think about, meditate on, problems and not God’s word we are giving that which is not from God priority. Matthew 6:33 states we are to:  “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,” we are not to seek first man’s opinion.

Bad news travels fast because people like hearing how bad other people are doing. Newspapers, magazines and television news make money telling bad news. Even blog post and video post that have inflammatory headlines will get the attention of more people than a positive one.

What I did not discuss is how bad news adversley affects your health. There is a reason why the Apostle tells Believers to meditate on, think about, these things. I have shared Philippians 4:8-9 using the King James, the Voice and (see below) the Expanded translations because it is important for each person to evaluate what he or she is thinking about.

PHILIPPIANS 4:8-9 THE EXPANDED BIBLE
[L- Finally; In conclusion; or Now then] Brothers and sisters, ·think about [focus your thoughts on; fill your minds with] things that are true and honorable and ·right [just] and pure and ·beautiful [lovely] and ·respected [commendable]. If there is anything that is ·good [morally excellent] and worthy of praise, ·think about [focus your thoughts on; fill your minds with] these things. Do what you learned and received and heard ·from [L- in] me, and what you saw ·me do [L- in me]. And the God ·who gives [L- of] peace will be with you.
